Like many of the writers I know, I still must work that day job to pay the bills. And like others, I also have children, very busy needful children. There are so many demands on my time, often the thing I forfeit so I can write is sleep. I get up early. I stay up late and squeeze in a few hours, a few pages whatever I can get done. I know some colleagues who will write on their twenty mnute breaks at work or take ten minutes from lunch, but I can't do that. I can't get into a scene if I know I only have a few minutes. I need chunks of time that will allow me to complete an entire scene.
One of the things that does help me is using taxi time to plot and think through dialogue and emotions. If you have children, you know you're in the car a lot. For instance, today I drove 8 hours picking up my daughter from field hockey camp. I was by myself one way, and she slept most of the way home. That gave me a lot of time to think about my next 3 or 4 scenes and where I wanted them to take the story.
I thought about promotional stuff I needed to do also. And of course, I dreamed of the best seller I'm going to have one of these days. So how about you, gather writers. How do you manage your time so you have time to write. Share, please.
